S/37515, Rifleman, Albert George Walter MANNING
Aged 19

Rifle Brigade
attached to 1st/28th (County of London)Battalion, Artists Rifles
(enlisted as No. 10965, Officers Training Corps)
Died of his Wounds on Monday 30th September 1918

Born in Newmarket in Q4-1898 [Newmarket 3b:490]to Albert Samuel and Mary MANNING (née ANGOLD) of Hillside, Cheveley Road, Newmarket.

1901 census...Albert [2] was at 'Hillside', Cheveley Road, Newmarket with his father [37], an architect and deputy clerk to the scales, born Newmarket; his mother Mary [31] born Highgate,London and his brother James J [1], born Newmarket.

1911 census...Albert,"Jinks", was a 12 yrs old student at Trent College, Long Eaton, Notts in the 1911 census. His parents were at Esthlon, Bury Road, Newmarket with his sister Rosemary Grace [9] and brother Cedric Rolfe [7] both born in Newmarket. Brother James cannot be found and no children are recorded as dying.

It is hard to say when he was wounded, but on the 26th September the Artists Rifles left their Camp for the trenches just outside Queant, where they were to assemble prior to a march on to their "tape" between Moeuvre and Inchy, knowing when they left (having received all the barrage tables, etc.) that they were in for one of the biggest battles fought by the British Armies during the whole of the War, as the Division had to cross the Canal du Nord and take the Hindenburg Line in conjunction with the Canadians on their left, and the Guards on their right. This was only to be the first phase, and as far as the Division was concerned, the 190th Brigade was the first to kick off. Afterwards, the other Brigades were to go through the Artists and capture Anneux and get on as far as they could. Practically all their objectives were achieved, despite fire from three sides at times, as one supporting unit had failed to start with them.

It was reported that he died at No.20 C.C.S ( this was at Doignt, nr Peronne), which begs the question as why he is buried in Etaples? It is more likely it was 20 General Service Hospital
